Community Overview
Edgewood was developed as a distinct town during the Reconstruction era that saw dramatic population growth in Atlanta between 1870 and 1910. Now an Atlanta neighborhood, Edgewood was annexed by Atlanta in 1909, even though it lies across the county line from most of the city to the west. The neighborhood is about three miles from downtown Atlanta.
Although Edgewood is uniquely pedestrian-oriented, it is also served by two MARTA lines, including the Edgewood-Candler Park station on the neighborhood’s north side. Walkers and cyclists enjoy the PATH network of off-road trails and bike paths, and a pretty atmosphere of tree-lined streets adds to the residential ambience. There is also convenient shopping, parks and playgrounds, and business centers.
Edgewood’s housing stock consists of older bungalows that date to its earlier years, along with a mix of newer apartment buildings, townhomes and single-family residences. The Edgewood Retail District comprises 44 acres of mixed-use development on land formerly owned by Atlanta Gas Light at the edge of Little Five Points, anchoring the neighborhood. The retail district, with major big-box stores as well as smaller shops, is a drawing card for all residents of the area known as East Atlanta.
